  • Semi-broken amplifier NAD C320 - volume knob and inputs

    Hi,

I bought a NAD C320 in full working condition, but it seems it was destroyed in the mail. Obviously the sender could have lied, but based on my impression and his eagerness to help me out after I have paid him, it seems he is no liar.

So the main down fall here is that the volume does not work. It is in a really loud setting (maybe max - not sure), and I am unable to adjust it, both with the knob and the controller. The controller seems to be working with everything except the volume. Even the mute button is not working.

Another thing is that the only input that works is main in (see attached picture below), no other inputs give any sound (even though I have adjusted to the correct setting in the front).Click image for larger version

I don't really know anything about amplifiers. But does anyone here have an idea of what might be wrong and how to fix it?

    Thanks for your help.

Well, that MAIN IN jack is the power amp input. You are bypassing the whole preamp, so none of the controls will do anything, and it will be maximum loud.

Seems to me your preamp section is not functioning.

Well that clears up quite a lot. Thanks a lot Enzo

Do you have any idea what could cause the preamp section to just stop functioning?

Oh, it is an entire system, many circuits. It could be a zillion things. If none of the input channels work, then I look for something common to them all, either power supply or the master section.

Too many times I have worked on a receiver and inadvertently hit a mute switch or a tape monitor switch, which killed my output. So do make sure you have no mute switch on, and that you have no tape monitor switches on. They might be called record monitor, I don;t know your unit.

Ensure Tape Monitor is not pressed in.
It is unlikely to have suffered damage to the volume control if the knob is not damaged.

If you can't fix it, I probably can.

Thank you both very much for your replies. Will check it out, and see if I get anywhere. I did (when I was pressing all the buttons) try to press the Tape Monitor on and off, so I don't think that was the problem. It seems switching modes was working since the light indicators on the front were showing the correct chosen mode.

Point is you were sold a misrepresented and damaged product, "eagerness" my *ss.

Test hi eagerness by sending amp back and asking for full refund, maybe you lose shipping charges one or both ways.

I´d expect shipping damage as a crushed corner, bent amp cover, gouges/scratches (matching similar damage on package), broken knobs, etc. , not a microprocessor software glitch or damaged electronic controller.

I hear what you are saying, but it was from a private buyer (think craigslist), and the guy has offered to reimburse me, and has created case with the postage company. Super quick to reply and eager to help. If this guy sold me a faulty product, he would be a world class actor at seeming innocent.

You do have the links from "pre out" to "main in" installed, yes?

I had not Greg Robinson. Everything works perfectly now (always did). I took it out when I initially connected to main. Had no idea they were important. I feel like an idiot. But I am a very happy idiot!

So the photo in post #1 is not YOUR unit? The links are in place in that photo.
