  • '93 peavey Classic 30 Preamp Tube

    12ax7 crackling #, power on and running. Tapping it increases noise level. Swap tubes and stays with socket. Solder joints are not loose. Socket itself will move but pins are holding to board, not moving. Reflowed solder, no change.

    When you tap on the tube, you are also sending mechanical vibrations into the board. One weak area is the rows of little bare wire jumpers between the boards. Those can break/crack. Their solder can fail
    Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

      Checked all the jumper wires, reflowed all the tube sockets, preamp and power tubes, good normal output, no noise. Thanks for your help.
