  • Peavey Transformer 112; loud hum

    **New guy, non-techie alert**

After searching and reading a few threads here I feel like a 3rd grader that wandered in to an advanced physics class. That said, I'd really appreciate any help that may get me pointed in the right direction concerning my amp.

I just picked one of these up a few days ago and am having a problem with a loud hum when I power it up. I've tried several different outlets, footpedal unplugged, instrument plugged in/not plugged in, etc. to no avail. The hum is quite loud irrespective of volume knob position (volume knob does not affect the volume of the hum). It seems that after a few minutes of being powered up the hum decreases to an almost tolerable level, but certainly not quiet. I absolutely love this amp and it's possibilities, but I have to get rid of the hum! I'm not a tech guy, know next to nothing about electronics, but learn quickly and am willing to try just about anything. Is there anything you can suggest for troubleshooting this? I'd really like to do it myself if not simply because of the expense of having someone else do it, then for the education. Many thanks in advance.

Look for cracked solder on the main filter caps.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
