  • Reliable Power Cord w/ Clip Source Needed

    Hey all,

I have a regular who wants the amps in his collection to have the little clip that holds the 3-prong head to the cord when you wrap it on the back of the chassis. The same way as on old Sunn and Acoustic gear. We've talked about adding clips and cable wraps to the mix, but he really wants to keep the clip as part of the head of the cable.

The thing is, when I try to order them from Amazon with the clip, like in the listing's pictures, they often don't come with the clip. Mojotone and CE Dist don't carry them either. I've even talked to some of the vacuum stores in the area, and they say they don't carry them.

Does anyone have a reliable source for this kind of thing or is it too niche of a request?

Mostly what came to mind is the 3 prong vacuum cleaner power cables that have clips. That led me to something at least...

When the going gets weird... The weird turn pro!

Interesting. The power cords with the clip have gotten hard to find.
One precaution is to buy from a supplier that maintains good source control and is therefore selling you a specific brand and part number.
I know of one line cord assembly that might work for you. It is the Volex P/N 17507. (By the way, Volex bought Belden)

Attached is a copy of the Volex 17507 data sheet. The link to the Mouser page that shows them in stock is https://www.mouser.com/c/?q=Volex%2017507
You will need to cut off the female end if you are hard wiring the cord to the amp.

I can't guarantee that the part will really really have the clip. I suppose that you could contact Mouser customer service to verify.

      Best of luck,
      Tom

Thanks for the info y'all! I reached out to mouser about the part you mentioned, Tom. Hopefully they can verify that the clip is present. I hate to waste the end of the cable and potentially charge the customer for a pricier replacement, but if they insist on the clip, then this might be the best longterm solution for their collection.

I'll report back if/when mouser reaches back out to me.

I'll admit NOT knowing who Volex is, but....THEY BOUGHT BELDEN????!!! Must be a much larger and profitable company. I never considered Belden getting bought up by somebody else, but, so it goes in 2022. Sigh........

While I too have always liked that molded cable-grip feature we found on Vacuum Cleaners and other such attached power cords on domestic appliances. Seems like there should be some attachable widget (besides Velcro straps, that while they work, getting them out of the way is tedious).

I've purchased replacement cord sets from electronic distributors before. Most tend to be larger gauge than the original cord and not as long. I find most original cord sets are 10 feet long where the replacements are usually 6 feet.

Then there is the issue of the strain relief. A three wire cord is automatically larger diameter, it's very difficult to enlarge the hole in the strain relief to make the three wire cord fit. Most recently I've been buying black 10 foot extension cords at WalMart.

Some IEC cords have the clip, but they tend to be limited to 6 feet.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

I hate to waste anything too. Somewhere, there may be a perfect solution but the search time to find it hugely wipes out any cost savings.

That was a surprise to me too. I looked it up and it turns out that Belden sold its power cord division to Volex in 1999. For a while, product was still being delivered branded with the Belden name. Maybe that was existing stock they acquired or stock that was already in distributor's warehouses. Belden still exists as a "cable" company.

As a fallback if you can't find the cord, I seem to recall plastic or rubber 'S' clips used for this purpose. You could affix one end right by the plug with some kind of adhesive so it would stay put.

A US company I'd never heard of (Kord King) sells a 3 conductor with a cord-grip, their CG1000 and CG6000 both have this feature

Kord King certainly offers lots of choices but it appears that they cater to OEM. Do you know if they sell in small qualities through distributors?

Mouser got back to me and confirmed that the 17507 10 B1 part does come with the clip! Thanks!
