I'm still tempted to think they are building them in some new way that is responsible. Chuck's query should get to the bottom of it. But meanwhile, does anyone have a JJ ECC83 and a microscope?

Man thats a clean break, looks like when we'd make chem glassware and score a big tube with a triangular file then wet the scratch with spit and touch a molten glass blob to it. But 12AX7s do not get very hot, EL34world's Thelonius used an IR thermometer to measure them at about 125F/52C after 10 minutes idle time. Very Odd!
Several people have reported this behaviour as specific to JJs but mostly 5-8 yrs ago. Theory then was sped up production gave a high stress area.
