    I do a similar thing sans the copper wire often. For instance on a SMD op amp, I just solder all of the pins together on each side allowing you to heat 4 pins at the same time and gently pry up the chip.with an x-acto knife then go back and forth side to side until the chip is free. Then clean up the excess solder.

    I actually found another of his videos where he shows a similar technique. Start at about the 8 min. mark



    It works well, but you have to be careful not to tear up traces. It's also made more difficult if they've glued the IC's down first. Guys who do this enough get quite good at it. I saw a guy at a trade show once demonstrate replacing SMD IC's with a solder gun (not iron)- the big Weller type. It was pretty amazing.

      We used to get a exacto knife with a new blade, cut the pins from the chip for easy removal. When it's glued down, good luck.
