  • Blackening hardware?

Has anyone successfully blackened screws and hardware? I am working on an amp with rusty black oxide screws. I would like to reblacken them. If it is too much trouble or if the screws are badly deterioated I will just replace with new.

You can google for lots of low tech methods like hot vinegar that will get you to grey but I have found that if you want it a black coating that lasts you need to buy a blackening solution. Not worth it for screws unless you want to be 100% original.

You may already know this source, but mcmaster.com has lots of black oxide screws, and a nice interface for finding the proper size and options.

After a good clean up (spin them in a drill and use emery cloth on a piece of wood) I heat the heads to red heat and plunge them briefly into oil and take them out quickly after the redness has disappeared, so they smoke. Leave them to cool down on their own. Sometimes needs a repeat of the process to get a deep finish. I keep a can of used engine oil just for this job. A quick wipe off and they look good. I use this method a fair bit for blackening mild steel.

For screws make it red in flame and drop it in mineral oil.

I use a black oxide kit from Caswell Plating.

I use it for automotive fasteners.

Probably overkill for a few small screws.

That blue liquid is the same as the Jax from Amazon.
