  • HR Deluxe with 6V6 - Should I engage the 4 ohm tap ?

I've already dropped a set of old RCA 6v6 and they sound fine with the negative bias voltage properly lowered. Now I was wondering if sticking a 1/4 jack as a plug with nothing soldered to it would be a good idea to engage the 4 ohm tap to deal with the primary impedence mismatch?

Sorry for the triple post, it gave a strange error message and I kept trying How do I delete them ?

If you're cranking the power amp hard (which I suppose may have been the point of swapping to 6V6?), then yes, adjusting things to reflect a higher load impedance back to the 6V6 may be beneficial to their operating life.

Plus it may sound a bit different, perhaps better.

If you're just playing at lower power output levels, then it probably won't make much difference, it should be fine to use whichever arrangement sounds best.

Yikes when I replied, I got weird error messages too.

Just to clarify, I meant sticking a 1/4 jack with nothing soldered to, as a plug... in the second speaker output. It's a switching jack that engages the 4 ohm OT tap.

How strange, this thread is showing 0 replies?

At least the error message when posting has gone.

Just to have a less powerfull amp and a more useable volume range. Would you recommend changing anything else to the circuit if I leave the 6v6 permanently?

As the loading on the heater circuit has reduced, it's worth just checking that the heater voltage hasn't increased too much. What the V AC do you measure between pins 2 and 7 of either output valve socket?
Apart from that I can't think of anything.

                        Yes, you should.
Without doubling the load impedance the 6V6s will heavily overdissipate with signal even when biased cold.

Wow never though about the lower load on the heater supply. Good news, I expected to read 7v and have to hook up the Christmas tree to lower it, but I read 6.0 VAC with the 6L6s and 6.2-6.3 with the 6V6s. Perfect !
