Chuck, it has an EV in it w/ the usual EV monster magnet. The amp did not sound much better through my "nicer" speaker cab. This is a blackface RI type Concert. I will check out the preamp bypass caps and see if I may be able to increase plate voltage on preamp tubes... that'd help right? I will also see about a filter cap upgrade.

If it's the bf circuit I don't think you'll need to increase the preamp voltages. They're pretty high now. If your plugging humbuckers into it then 3 or 4 on the volume would be typical for a bf type amp. As I said, if farting aout is the problem then some preamp revoicing could help. Otherwise that amp is really designed to run clean at maximum watts. That's not the same thing as volume knob setting. With a strong enough input signal the amp will overdrive with the volume set to one. I'm talking about how many clean watts it can make regardless of where the volume control needs to be set. With the right tubes in it and good filters that amp should perform. If it's just a semantic thing, ie: the volume setting is disturbing you because it seems low, you need to get past that. The volume control on that amp is very early in the preamp so it acts like more of a sensitivity control for whatever insrument you plug into it. If you had a guitar with a weak signal you may need to turn the volume control to eight before the amp began to break up. But if the amp simply isn't loud enough then I would say make sure it's in proper working condition and then if it's still not loud enough you need a bigger amp. I know the EV speakers have a good rep but I don't know what their efficiency rating is. A good efficient speaker can make an amp MUCH louder. So... Make sure it's a 12at7 in the PI. Get some clean power tubes and make sure the filter caps are good. Possibly increase the first filter uf rating and possibly use smaller cathode bypass caps in the preamp if the amp gets farty as it begins to break up. Use efficient speakers.
