Does anyone know any techs that do amp mods in the south cal area?

  • #2
most techs should be happy to do a mod. i can imagine that souther california has plenty of techs. wether they are good at what they do is something that should be considered.

The first rule of mods is to know **before you start** what you want to achieve.

We coined a term over at diystompboxes for a newly identified illness. It's

          BUMS

which stands for Blind Urge to Mod Syndrome. Some people never recover.

Seriously, if you don't know where you want to go, any direction - including none at all - is as good as any other.
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

I'm in So Cal, in Orange Co. Give me a PM if you'd like to discuss things.

Sorry - yes, it is expensive! And like good unobtainium from anywhere, the harder it is to get the more you can charge for it, no matter what color the final product is.

My experience is that BUMS sufferers are not good customers. Even if they pay up promptly, they do enough pestering to eat up time equal to what they paid you - and then some.

But I defer to the working professional. All I really know about this is watching amp tech friends trying to make a living.

BUMS, that's good! It amazes me how many guys will email me and tell me they just bought an amp, haven't played it yet, but need to know what mods I think they should get. I'm all for making money, but only if it delivers what someone wants or needs changed in their amp. It sure isn't about what I think they need!

There's Torres Engineering: Tube Amps, Kits, Pickups, Tubes, Parts, Books, Fender, Marshall, Online Music Store You can call Dan direct, or at least you used to. Some people love him, some not so sure. Like anything else.

Dan's good for mods and such. Always treated me fair and delivered the goods on tone. He's in San Mateo last I knew. That's not southern Ca. It's technically northern Ca. (but I always saw the Bay Area as central Ca.) Too far to go IMHO.

There has to be good techs in So Cal. L.A., San Diego, c'mon... That has to be the highest concentration of pop and rock guitar players in the free world. Someone is modding and fixing those amps. Call a few local music stores and ask about after warranty service and mods. Any names that come up twice call and check them out.
