Hi there, I'm only new to this forum, it looks great. Can anyone give a difinitive answer on wether or not it is ok to pull tubes on a triple rectifier. I keep hearing mixed opinions.
I ran my triple rec with two pulled tubes for about two years. The reason people have mixed opinions is that there's no easy way to adjust the speaker impedance so that the tubes see the same load impedance as they were designed to. As long as the tubes aren't running grossly out of spec to the point where there will be damage, there's no reason why you can't do it.
I have a stereo cab, which when in stereo would be 8 ohms each side, so I ran each side into each of the 8 ohm jacks. At that point in time I didn't know nearly what I knew now about amps, so I could very well have been running it way out of whack and not known. Now if I had the amp, I'd just run 16 ohms to the 16 ohm jack and or 16 ohms into the 8 ohm jack - depends on what kind of number I was getting for bias and primary impedance.
Measure the OT turns ratio for each of the secondaries assuming they're loaded as designed. There a several threads on here about measuring the turns ratio, I'd rather direct you to a search than try not to screw it up by re-explaining it here. After you have the turns ratio, back calculate the primary impedance for a couple of different load scenarios. 16 ohm load into 16 ohm jack, 8 ohm load into 16 ohm jack, 16 ohm load into 8 ohm jack, whatever.
From there, see which one gets you closest to the 2k to 3k ish primary impedance range, which is a good range for a quad of 6L6s, and run it like that.
