Hot Rod Deluxe, Quieting output for certain gigs

I have a question I would like to ask to try to help out a friend...He has a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and a fat Squire playing lead. He tells me the amp sounds best at a certain volume level and the sound quality is not the same if it is lower, the problem is at certain locations the output is too much and he would like to be able to keep the amps volume level setting where he likes it. So he uses a blanket over the speaker grill to quiet the output (no it's not blocking ventilation flow)


Anyone have any tips or tricks he could try to get sound levels to lower volume and keep the sound quality he needs ??

On occasions the amp is mic'd and fed to mixer... Is this similar to what you are saying ??

yep...and the amp gets miked inside one of those. just an example, there are different companies out there.

If he's not going after power stage saturation (really cranked) but he wants to be able to push preamp more, a simple trick is to put a passive volume in the "preamp out-power amp in loop". This is very effective if you don't need power tubes saturation and speaker distortion.
