  • Mesa DC-3 questions

I just aquired one of these and after some minor tweaks it works fine but I have some questions. It is a Revision B version
1.It came with a peavey 2 button footswitch without leds,I opened the footswitch and held an led across the switch terminals and it will light up when the switch is activated but I can hear a relay clicking in the amp,can I install leds on the footswitch?
2.At the Boogie Board many advise a master volume mod-remove a 220k resistor that bridges the middle leg to one of the outside terminals.I tried it but the lead channel seemed to sound snarly after so I returned it to stock.Does anyone have any advice maybe use a different value resistor?
3.Some folks have swapped a Mercury Mag OT with excellent results, any other recommended tranys? How about an AC30 OT?
    Thanks for any Ideas-Kevin

Just about any 50 watt 4k output trans will work- if you're looking for heavier crunch tones it'll help to have a bigger output transformer.

If you're looking for more modern/heavy crunch tones you can try something I did for a friend. He has a dc-5 but much of it is the same. I moved the gain control so that it's after the first gain stage then added/removed components as needed to make the lead channel more closely resemble any of a number of hi-gain amps. I mixed a little Bogner and a little Dual Rectifier into my friend's amp. I seem to recall changing the tone stack to resemble a dual rect tone stack. It's much crunchier and he was really happy because he mostly plays 311, Incubus and Swedish metal! He doesn't have to use the EQ for a good crunch tone now- it just makes the mid scoop more extreme.
