Two 6L6's in a Four 6V6 amp?

  • Two 6L6's in a Four 6V6 amp?

    I know the heater draw is approximately the same but Im a little confused as to different plate resistance/impedance issues(if any). The amp runs at 395 PV so I biased the two 6L6's up to around 50 ma (around 65% idle dissapation). Sounds good. Thoughts? Thanks Bob

    It should be fine. Push - pull 6V6 pairs in guitar amps tend to drive a load of about 6k6 - 8k, so parallel pairs would halve that to 3k3-4k.
    6L6 push - pull pairs in guitar amps tend to drive a load of about 4k.
    The same OT is usually used for 4 x 6V6 or 2 x 6L6.
    6L6 might require a higher bias supply and greater input signal from the phase splitter.
    If it biasses up ok and sounds good then I think that your arrangement will be fine. Peter.

        You're good with 2 but 4 6L6's could do some damage to the OT. The 6L6 GB would be a little easier on it as a 23 watt tube as opposed to a 30 watter is less stress but I doubt you'll have a problem unless it's Cathode biased running around 100% dissipation. 4 6v6's @12watts = 48 watts and 2 6L6GC's at 30 watts = 60 watts. That's a good bit more and even though the tranny probably has some extra just depending on what it's actual rating really is.

          So if I bias the 6l6's to 40 ma wouldnt that be the same as running 4 6V6's at 20 ma? Right now they are averaged at about 45-46 ma. One is at 50 and the other about 41 ma. The OT isnt getting warm but the PT is warm to the touch after playing for an hour or so of playThanks Bob

            No problem. 40mA is 40mA, no matter how many tubes are involved.
            Amp Kat said that if you bias them 6L6's at 100% you'll get in trouble.
