I want to place a choke in the power supply of my Crate Stealth GT50H, but I'm not sure of the placement. I believe it would replace R89. I 've attached the schematic hoping someone with a little experience can help. Also, I'm not sure of what size to use. I'm trying to tone the raspiness and harshness of the amp down. It's a hybrid tube/opamp/diode amp that has a cool design (Lee Jackson design). I plan on changing the JJ 6V6 tubes out for EH 6V6's 'cause the JJ's are more like 6L6's and not as smooth as a "normal" 6V6. I believe the plate structure is alot bigger in the JJ's giving them better ability to handle higher plate voltage, but the GT50H only runs around 410 on the plates. I have other things I want to do to tame the amp down a little like an OT upgrade, maybe a few cap and resistor tweeks, but I'm thinking a fifty watt amp should have a choke to tighten things up a little and help the PT. Any other suggestions are always welcome.

Crate Stealth GT50H Choke Placement

Before I begin, I cant help you with the placement of the choke, i could guess but I wouldn't want to lead you down the wrong path.
As it turns out I've modded my Stealth quite a bit in the preamp and have just dived under the bonnet to attempt to fix the gain channel a few hours ago (trying to cut out the op amps as i dont need that uber-gainy sound). I would just like to wish you luck and tell you there is plenty of other ways to tame the harshness. I found my fix in a pair of 10" alnico speakers, originally meant for hi-fi uses, but they just seem to match the head so well. And they were only $40 (AUD) from ebay. Also old preamp tubes help warm it up. I just have some old used ones, but they help make it a lot nicer in general, obviously NOS would be a lot better but in my case beggars cant be choosers. And I'm sure replacing the power amp tubes will help as well but i haven't brought myself to lay down the doe.
Good Luck, and if you stumble upon the secret to getting the best out of this amp please share.
Cheers,
Wilko.
