Hi, I have seen some shops online that will mod fender hrds but am wondering if someone can explain some of these mods for the diy'er.
Here are some of the things I would like to fix:
1.) The touchy volume controls: I heard replacing the master with a 1 meg ohm will work. Is this the right value, I've read this is better than using the 250k. I've also read that the switch between the clean and overdrive is not as even according to the actual number setting. They wrote to put a jumper wire in place of R45.
quoting post: "I found that Fender had built in some attenuation into the lead master circuit to balance their linear taper pot with the clean channel’s audio taper pot. The remedy is to remove this attenuation. I did this by merely soldering a jumper wire across R45 (47K), which you find near the lead master control. This just about doubles the volume of the lead signal."
Does this sound right and safe?
2.)It is very bassy. I know i can just turn down the bass, but I've read some mods that will improve this. I think they gave resistor values and maybe changing the pot out too.
3.)The gain stage of the more drive channel. It is quite a volume jump from drive to more drive. I've read replacing the preamp tubes with a different model will work. Is there anything else to try also?
4.)The reverb sounds very distant. It sounds like there is no attack and not up front. Not sure about the difference between tube driven and solid state driven reverb circuits. And I think i read that the hrd is solid state. Could this be the problem I am identifying.
Hope someone wouldn't mind giving some pointers on this stuff.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Sean
