  • Help with amp fan idea with a twist

I was thinking it would be cool to use a computer fan to cool a pcb tube amp. I know this is not a new idea but my twist is. I have a Onespot power supply. Would it be possible to safely run a 5 or 12 volt dc fan with this? What would you need to do to wire it up? I think it would be a cool solution and you could use it on more than one amp.

    Thanks for the help

A Onespot is a switching power supply. Yeah you could use it as long as you didn't exceed the current limit. Just put a jack on the fan leads. Remember that it is a regulated 9vdc supply. Ideally you would want a 9v fan, but a 12v would probably spin enough. However, why would you use a nice pedal supply like this for a fan? Just buy a cheap $3 12vdc wall wort or recycle one from whatever for free. They are everywhere.

Thanks for the info. Its funny I never even though of using a 12 volt wall wart I was just thinking it would be cool to power the fan from the pedal board rather than making it a permanent mod to the amp. Your suggestion makes much more sense. I swear my head aint screwed on right today. I have done everything bassackwards.
      Thanks again for the help.

No worries...It's actually pretty common to have a whisper fan hooked up to a 12v wallwort in your kit. You can just plug it into the same power strip that the amp does and use it on any amp.

Even if you power a 12V PC fan with a 9V supply, it *will* turn, though a tad slower and with less noise.
In tube amps, *any* air flow is better than nothing.
Anyway a client of mine turned my added fan off in his Matchless Chieftain 120W claiming "it lost sound quality" Oh well !!
The fact that the plastic panel was bent by the heat, and that the amp visits me regularly once or twice a year because of either dried caps or worn tubes does not bother him.
