  • 6V6 options?

are there different tubes in the 6V6 family that one can directly sub into a small SE amp to achieve tonal/response variations?

This thread on 6EY6 tubes might give you some ideas.

There are lots of tubes that are pin-compatible, but they may red-plate or consume too much heater current in your particular amp, so I wouldn't consider all of them "direct subs".

I have run Russian NOS 6P6S in low voltage 6V6 applications. The 6P6S is a beam tetrode but has the same pin-out, and similar plate and screen dissipation rating and load resistance requirements and recommended bias point etc. However they apparently don't take higher voltages very good, but they are excellent up to around 350 (so far as I have seen), and they are dirt cheap.

Really good bandwidth in my 6G15 clone
