  • volume problem

    Hi,

    I have volume problem on my amp
    it is very load at 2 and starts to break up at 3
    The amp is loud at 2 of volume and sounds
    fantastic but when the knob is on 3 it gets even
    louder (very perfect volume for a bigger jazz gig with
    load drummer ) but loses the clean character and
    when playing power chords or using a pick with harder
    dynamics the amp gives distortion.
    This is a problem for me since I need only cleans for
    jazz , i wish the amp could stay clean at 3 or better 4
    of volume .
    Do you think that the pull-boost could be involved
    in this even if not pulled ?
    or could be that the sovtek 6L6WXT cannot reach the
    application ?

    Amp description:
    - Deluxe pull boost circuit ,
    - Pro/super Reverb PT ,
    - Mercury Super Six Reverb OT w/ 2&4 secondary
    taps(100v)(the 2ohm tap is hooked up),
    - 2x matched Sovtek 6L6WXT,
    - WS1 Cooper Cap rectifier,
    - original TR fiter cap board w/ 2x 220uF-350w in series
    and 3x 20uF-500v in parallel filter cap arrangiament ,
    - 2x10 100v 8ohm Eminence Delta Demon speakers wired in parallel.
    -All the PI resistors have been changed to TR values
    -all the electrolytic and filter caps are brand new
    -the amp is quite not noisy except for the reverb that
    gives a little noise only when the rev knob is tuned up.
    - also tryed other combination on first stage filter
    caps values but got always the same result on the volume problem.

    thank you, John

    Hi John,

    Looks like you already have the amp setup for decent headroom. Not sure why you have the speakers connected to the 2ohm tap. Probably not much difference, but I'd try the 4 ohm. Looking at the specs for the Delta Demons, there are other speakers that at least according to ratings are more efficient. Not much of a practical solution at this point, but 2 12s would give more headroom, especially a speaker like a Swamp Thang.

    I too play jazz, and it can be difficult maintaining a pristine clean at high volumes. One of my favorite players uses a 300watt amp. Ive had good luck with Twin Reverbs, but it's not an amp I will cart around anymore at my age!

      If the amp already has a 2 ohms tap, I'd add two more speakers. That'd be most efficient for more headroom on same volume settings IMHO.

        Hi,
        thanks to you all for answering

        my OT is a Twin/Super Six reverb Output Transformer
        that is designed for 4x 6L6 power tubes ;
        The amp is "Pro Reverb style" w/only two 6L6 ;
        so using just two power tubes doubles the 2ohm *OT's impedance to 4ohm;
        on the other side I have two '10 speakers (100w) 8ohm each wired in parallel for a 4ohm load;
        *this should be a right match between the output & speakers impedance.
        I tryed some 12AT7 in V1, V2 and in V3 without result ;
        even with those quiter pre-amp tubes the volume
        problem persists.

        Thank you , John
