  • Fender Pro Jr MODS

Please forgive the double post, I think I originally posted in the wrong section.

My Pro JR is way too "chimey" for my liking.
Even with the Tone knob turned all the way down.

I looked at the Schematic and it seems there is a .01 Cap on it.
I was thinking of replacing that with a .033

Any advice on what I could do to put some more "Bottom End" into the Tone ??

    thank you,

    Grady

Clipping C2 out of the Circuit takes care of the "chime".

The amp sounds much better now.

Just out of interest, are you running the factory valves? I got some matched sets of JJs which improved mine a lot - also changed the speaker to one of Eminence Ramrod or Cajun, depending on my mood.

I'd like to fiddle further though, to see what other improvements I could make. I like the idea of extracting something extra from a little box like this.

Never done any modding to circuitry though. Was your C2 mod difficult?

I changed the Tubes to a Matched set of Groove Tubes before I bought it at my local store.

The C2 MOD is simple, all you need is a pair of small Wire cutters.
You don't have to remove the Circuit Board or anything, just snip that Capacitor right off.

The C2 Cap is a Bypass for the high frequencvies that allows them to go around the Tone Control.

Snip that baby out of there and those "Chimey" Highs disappear.

Don't worry, you still have plenty of Highs.
In fact, I still play my Pro Jr. with the Tone knob turned all the way down.

If the amp sounds too chimey try a 5751 in V1, some thing like a good GE, Sylvania, RCA or Siemens will take alot of the brighthness away, and put a more fuller mellowness thru the whole amp. GEJAN5751 is relatively easy to obtain and will sound a whole lot better IMHO than today's 12AX7s, esp for harps.
