  • 70s B-15n needs PT (any cheaper alternatives?)

    OK!
so Ive got an early 70s (blue lettering black tolex) B-15n
    6L6 version w tube rect.

the PT is blown and I was wondering what you guys might
think of an alternate trans? Im going to go for MAX power
with this so highish B+ is ok

Ill obviously keep the original can for a later restoration
I dont want to butcher the amp up at all but was offered it
to use (basically have) if I fix it. I have a tour coming up in
the spring and our fill in bassist wont be wanting/able to carry
and set up our early 70s SVT. since everywhere we'll be playing
will be ~200-600 cap venues I figure the B-15n will be a good
little distortion generator and that the PA will do most of the work.

If this is a totally lame idea - Im considering just buying the whole
powersupply kit from fliptops.com and having a tech do it up for me since
I dont have the time right now and have never worked on an ampeg.
Ive got a nice JBL Ill swap in for the CTS and keep the CTS for period
resto if I ever want to go that route.

sorry for the epic post- just looking for some ideas!

    thanks!

yeah- am I just being too cheap?

I should probably do the cap can too....

thought someone might suggest a big ole honkin
hammond or something.. Id like to get a little more
      b+ for tightness n volume..
its probably going to be dimed at most shows
we normally use a lot of fuzz on the bass
and it will be nice to be able to get it from the
amp instead of an OCD pedal...

Ill probably just stick to stock n maybe throw some
7581s in there for extra umphf

Id even be into 6550/KT88s if the PT was up to it.
kinda like a mini SVT combo

      any ideas are welcome!
      thanks!

You could very likely use a garden variety Tweed Bassman PT, But it won't look as cool as the canned version. Just bite the bullet and get the right transformer. It's a vintage amp. Just do it right.

          yeah yer probably right..

I was kinda hoping for a quick n dirty fix
for this tour and then would do a proper
restoration later. And kinda hoping for some
more power for possible 6550 but
          Ill probably just get this:
          Fliptops

the stock trannys cans look pretty nice
          hehe
