I thought of using a 12AY7 in my SF Champ homebrew instead of a 12AX7

  • I thought of using a 12AY7 in my SF Champ homebrew instead of a 12AX7

    Or using the extra 9 pin socket hole in the chassis it's in so I can place a 12AY7 in the preamp and a 12AX7 in the second gain stage after the tone stack that way I would use 1 triode of each tube since a 12AY7 will kill the gain through out and if the 12AY7 sucks then I can just place a 12AX7 back in place and have the same amp as before it's only a matter of moving a few leads .

    I thought perhaps if the 12AY7 did work I could then install a tone stack like a 5F2A and not have so much break up since the BF tone stack sucks out tone and then perhaps I would not need a NFB loop .

    They way it is now I get plenty of headroom yet I thought this mod would offer more open sounds and not be as gainy as a stock 5F2A .

    If you are after cleans, you won't be disappointed with 12AY7, they sound good too.
