  • Mod/Tweak VHT Special 6 Combo

    Hi to all,

I am currently looking into mods for my VHT Special 6. I am doing this for fun and wanting to see how far I can take it. So far I have replaced the stock chinese tube with a Electro Harmonix 6V6 and a JJ 12au7. I am also currently testing an Eminence Redcoat Ramrod 10" speaker to see if I like it better than the stock VHT 10". Just curious what other mods anyone has done, OT? Bias? 6L6? Tone Stack? Please let me know your thoughts. I am still continously researching this topic out. Thanks for your input.

Do you have any specific goal?

Modding for mods' sake won't lead you far.

Juan, thank you for reply. In regards to your question I want to try a 6l6 in the special 6. I also have not experimented with different tubes to see what the impact on tone and sound would be. I also have a mesa boogie dc-5 of which I have left stock as I am completely happy with it. I am also interested in learing more about tube amplifier circuit design and theory. I also kind of figured that modding and tweaking my special 6 would help me towards the goal of learning tube amp design and theory along the way.

Jazz, Thank you for your reply. I am curious though in running the 6l6 tube. Did you do any mods to be able to run the 6l6 or just simply swap the 6v6 with the 6l6? I only ask because the range of answers from threads on this subject seem to have a vast amount of different answers from changing a fuse, or changing a resistor for rebias, or changing a resistor and cap and lastly nothing just swap.

            I did not 'do' anything.
I found that post & thought it would help.
After reading it, I am more confused than before.

            I repair amps.
I do not, generally speaking, do any mods.
            (Mostly demods)

I did have a Champ come through that had a 6L6 in it.
I did not note anything spectacular.
The only change was the tube.

              You bet.
Tons (and I mean *tons*) of suggested mods, all backed by subjective tests and constant mentions of "powerful sound".
Absolutely no way of getting an actual power measurement or a scope trace.
              Oh well.
