verb tank connections subbed for fx loop?

Hi all. I have never heard of this but was wondering if it's possible?
The reverb tank on my Palomino V16 is not very good. I have the hairbrained idea of running pedals or maybe a modeler through the tank connections and substitute them as an fx loop. Will this work? Ever heard of it? Can it handle it? I've searched the net but came up empty. Also, Is there is a way the check the load(impedance)of the RCA verb connections?

I've heard of it done, but from what I can remember it required altering the circuit in the amp. It's not a 'plug your FX into the jacks & go' kind of thing. I tried that on my 71 Ampeg VT40 and couldn't hear any effects at all, even with the reverb control dimed.
