  • Pro Reverb blackface mods

    Hi All,
My first post, yeee. I'm getting ready to recap my 70' to 73' non master volume, no mid control Pro Reverb and I figured that since I was going to be in there anyway maybe I should get it to blackface specs. Then I realized I have no idea wha they would be or if they would be worth doing in the first place. Any help?

    blackface circuit is an improvement

check schematics at schematicheaven.com. the changes are mainly in the phase inverter (more gain) and bias circuit (changes allow bias to be raised from the cold factory settings in silverface, instead of a bias balance)
compare schematics from a blackface super reverb, say aa763 to a silverface super reverb aa270. (super and pro same schematic). There are also some treble rolloff caps on the output tubes you can snip. You can go through the amp and upgrade the coupling caps, orange drops are popular in fenders.
Everytime I've made these changes and reset the bias it sounds like a different amp. Louder, more gain, it responds to the guitar volume, dynamic. All for the price of a few resistors and a little time rewiring.
