I have a friend (don't we all) that asked if I could mod his XXX to run on only 2 and possibly just 1 power tube as needed. Any ideas on what I might be getting myself into if I were to start researching this? Is there even any room inside this monster for additional circuitry?

It is a push pull amp, so you really don't want to run it on one tube.
All you need do to run on two tubes is to pull the end tubes out, then step the impedance down one on the speakers. In other words plug your 8 ohm speaker into the 4 ohm jack.
That's it.
The reduction in power will result in a whopping 3db less loudness.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
