  • My first DRRI mods and question

I am pretty new to this, so I wanted to ask others opinions about my first foray into amp modding (no one else I know understands what I'm talking about & my wife keeps asking me why I'm breaking my amp!).

I bought this amp used, and I liked it sound generally but wanted it amp to sound friendlier at lower volumes and to see if I could get rid of the ice-picky character of the vibrato channel. I loved the reverb, but couldn't even play "The Wind Cries Mary", without getting this annoying high end hash when strumming the chordal passages. I researched the DRRI mods from the blue guitar site and from the old ampage forum and got to work.

Here's a description of the changes I made:

C10 removed bright cap (eventually settled on 10pf)
C7 treble cap 250k upgraded to silver mica (same value)
R21 mids resisitor 6.8k to 10k (added mids)
R18 slope resisitor 100k to 90k (less treble)
C12 Vibrato ch. coupling cap .022 to .047 (more drive for Vibrato channel)
C25 Coupling capacitor between preamp/PI .001 to .01 (more drive overall?)
    Eminance RW&B replacement speaker

At the end of the day the amp was much more playable for styles other than country and surf. The high end hash is thankfully gone! It also has a slightly more overdriven tone even low volumes, which is what I wanted. After experimenting (caps are cheap so why not?) I ended up with a 10pf bright cap because the Dimarzio noiseless pups on my strat are darker than real SC's. It even sounded good with a .22pf bright cap but then it starts to effect the sound of your OD pedals.

I'm very happy & my only wish right now is to dial in a more defined low end. There's a muddiness to it (E,A strings in particular) that I can't dial out with losing too much low-end, which was how it was before the mods but my attention is directed to it now that the amp sounds better in the upper registers.

    Any thoughts?

Change that .01 to .0022uF cap.
Use .033uF to .047uF caps in the phase inverter to drive the power tubes.

      Thanks Bruce!

I was reading that .01 in C25 (silverface value) causes the amp to have more bass. So I was actually thinking about trying a lower value there. I'll have to give .0022 a try for sure.

Where in the circut do I find the Phase Inverter Caps?

EDIT - I misunderstood you here. C25 is usually referred to as the PI Capacitor but it sounds like you are referring to C12 which I already changed to .047. I have a lot to learn still!

      Thank again,

Keep in mind these recommendations are my personal taste choices...

I am talking about C25, the PI coupling cap... don't ever go any bigger then .0047uF in these amps... but try a .0022uF cap first... and make it a good high quality $1.00 plastic cap.
And, C12,... keep it stock at .022uF.
C27 and C28 are the power tube driver/coupling caps and those can be reduced to .033uF to .047uF.

... which is like the gold standard for amp mods! Thanks!

FWIW I recommend a few mods that I've been doing to these amps. Like a Ken Fischer Type-2 master volume control with a dual ganged pot (100k to 250k) replacing the 220k bias splitters. And I put 2 different mid boosts on the two different channels in my own amp. On one channel I replaced with 6.8k mid resistor with a 10k resistor and then wired up a 250k pot as a variable resistor to ground. On the other channel I wired up a variable tone stack bypass with a 0.01uF cap running through a 2M pot from the plate to the wiper of the treble pot.

I tried swapping in a *lot* of different tubes to get rid of the ice pickiness, and finally came up a combination that I like. Only it tends to get very microphone on stage with a loud band.

I'm going to print out the suggestions in this thread and take another look at my own amp because I'd really like it to sound more like this 1968 DR that I got to play at a blues jam Wednesday night (my solo starts at 2:25 and is my PRS SE w/ BurstBuckers going direct into the DR):

With a tone like that, who needs pedals??? LOL

            Bruce - Were not worthy!

I found a local dealer who stocks Orange Dorp 715P's in all value's so I going to try .0022uf in the C25. Then I'll try the rest of your suggestions.

Steve, Your master volume mod sounds interesting, just over my head at this point. What tubes did you settle on? I ended up with Tung Sol 6v6, Mullard CV4024's for PI and GT12Ax7-C's, can't afford NOS. I found if you use the tremolo a 5751 in V5 gives it the perfect amount of mojo.
