  • Selecting a speaker for my Traynor YCV50

    Hi All,

This is my first post so I hope it is not a stupid question...here goes...

I have a Traynor Custom Blue 50watt (YCV50) that I bought 2nd hand last year. The other person put an Eminence speaker in it but I now want to change it for something mroe my style. I play Classic (think Free, Hendrix) to Modern rock (think U2, Muse). The guitars I use through it are a Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's neck (Bareknuckle Rebel Yell pups) and a Fender American Standard strat (fitted with Kinman Woodstock pups)...

I generally use my Keeley moded tubescreamer for overdriven sounds but do use the amp channels for the odd song or two...

After doing a bit of research, I am thinking of a Celestion Gold, but here's the thing (basic question coming up)...

What ohm speaker would I get? Also, the amp is rated 50watt, the Celestion Gold is rated 50watt so that doesn't leave much headroom for clean sounds (which I really like out of the eminence speaker). How would clean sounds respond with the Gold? Is there another speaker out there that you would recommend?

    Thanks in advance,
    Slip

Which Eminence speaker do you now have?I had a YCV40 with an Eminence Legend GB12 in it.I liked that combo a lot.I'm no expert, far from it,but I think you are correct in thinking the 50 watt speaker will break up earlier that one rated higher.

Not sure which one is in it and can't check as it is with an amp repairer at the moment! eek! But I think I remember it being something like Texas Blues or similar wording to that effect...

I'd just like some more options on having a speaker that would cover the range of classic + modern tones. Maybe a 50watt rated speaker is they answer though but I'm not that keen on the idea of speaker break-up, I'd rather the amp provide overdriven sounds...

New Sensor has the Red, White and Blue on sale right now (dealer only?). That might work great for you. The Swamp Thangs kick some great tones over here.
Those Legend Greenback clones (with improvements) I hear are amazing. Sometimes sealing off some of the cabs open air can help too. You never see commercial speakers baffle only right?

What did you end up installing? Doesn't it come with a Celestion Vintage 30?
