JCM 900 4100 HOW CAN I ELIMINATE MY PREAMP
My pre amp went out a few months back and Ive been using my effects return in order to use the amp
and I really like it
How can I eliminate my preamp?
Is this a good idea?

If you are happy with the way it sounds, then there is no reason why you can't continue using the FX unit (which is effectively acting as a substitute pre-amp put into a signal insertion point between the existing pre-amp in your amp and the phase inverter/output stage). Your FX unit obviously has enough gain to substitute the signal power that (other/front) gain stage(s) of the pre-amp otherwise provide(s). No need to disconnect your pre-amp. The FX return socket is switched when a plug is inserted into it to ensure that the existing pre-amp signal is disconnected from driving into the output stage - under this condition the existing preamp signal can only be joined up to the output stage if a plug is inserted from the amp's FX send socket into the FX unit's input socket, completing the circuit.
