  • Redoing a gain stage

This guy brought me his amp. He says it breaks up too much and he says he'd like it cleaner sounding and not quite so 'brown' sounding. The first gain stage has a 220K plate load resistor and a 3.3K cathode resistor. I though I'd try lowering the plate load resistor something more Fenderesque, around 100K~130K but how then do I calculate the proper (new) cathode resistor to get about the same gain, or just a little less, from this preamp gain stage?
    Thanks in adv,
    Bob M.

Best post a drawing showing first 2 gain stages with tube types and the supply voltage.

Standard Fender value is roughly center-biased: 100K plate, 1K5 cathode. But first gain stage typically does not distort at all, and you need to dump some gain to ground by using a voltage divider after the gain stage.

Or! Is this a 12AX7 stage? Drop in a 12AT7!
