  • SUNN Sonaro Head

    I just got a SUNN Sonaro head with a 215 cabinet. In looking through all the archives I can find I only see reference to the Sonaro Combo Amps rather than the Sonaro stand alone head.

    Does anybody have any idea;
    1.) what the proper tube set was for this amp?
    2.) where the serial number and inspection sticker may be?
    3.) what vintage this head might be? I'm guessing 1969...???

    check this out

    http://www.dezirae.com/dezzie/sunn/sonaro.gif

    schematic says 1967 so that is a rough guide.

    tube line up is 12ax7, 7199, EL34, GZ34

    I don't know much about Sunn, some manufactures changed designs alot between the years under the same name. It might be significant or not but at least this is a rough idea.

    There is also some other information and a chassis photo of the Sonaro. might want to compare what you have to that. sorry I couldn't give a more comprehensive answer. Good luck.

      Anyone have a mirror site for the url above? I wanted to try to find a schematic for my Sonaro with EL34's.
      Thanks for any help or info,
      Ben

        This schematic is pretty close. The Sonaro started as a 40W combo in 67 and 68. In 69 it was split as a head/speaker but still 40W. In 1970 it was upgraded to 60W, a pair of 6550's with a 6AN8A in place of the 7199. Sunn schematics frequently have mistakes and normal production dictates small changes. An example is the schematic shows the 16 and 8 ohm taps being used but your amp may use the 8 and 4 depending on what speaker it was sold with.

          Excellent,
          Thank you very much for both the schematic and the words of wisdom.
