FBJ Fat switch question

I’m intrigued by the use of a FET in the ’Fat’ switch circuit of the blues junior. Why not simply wire a switch across R9?

It also allows remote activation using a footswitch.

It gives a slightly softer switching action by virtue of C31/R53. Maybe the designers encountered pops with just switching directly across R9.
