Yeah, I guess the size would depend upon the application. The little ones in guitar amps like the Gibsons were small.

ok , i have a preamp ive thrown together , basically a single channel 5E3 with some stuff stuck in between v1a and b .
i posted a pic of the schematic .... V3 still needs some tinkering .

but , i figured id put it pre PI , with the PI / power amp being of an established design .

im not dead set on using a tranny PI . seems like one has much more flexibility and control with a tube PI .

you all have really given me alot of info , Thank You Very Much !

i checked out the 300/400ps and the musicmaster bass schems . i like the mm bass better ... just cause it looks relatively simple circuit wise .
maybe ill change the 5e3 type preamp in my design to the mm bass specs (the potentially endless factor the the design stage seems to be a bit of a double edged sword for me) . that tranny used for the PI shouldnt be hard to source i wouldnt think seeing as how predomant fenders are .

i was looking through the hammond catalog at their interstage trannys , they may have a suitable one .

does anyone offer a kit for the musicmaster bass ? i figure i could build it stock (take operation notes - E,I,R,etc) , then slip my add ons in it .

im relatively new to the whole internet shopping thing so i dont really know whats available .

oh , and in regards to my preamp design , not looking to sell it or any such thing . just looking to make my own kinda noise

Not that I know of, but you can pick up an old MMBass for around 3 bills, depending on condition.

yea , theyre not expensive . i did do some price shopping and yup between $300-$400 .
but , ive got a few scavenged PTs and OTs laying around ... so a project amp is naturally in order
honestly , if i were to go buy a $300-$400 amp , it would probably be a mid 80s PV roadmaster ... totally different animal i know .
sorry about being all over the place , i was referencing a little gibson at the beginning of the thread and have since moved on to the fender and just mentioned a totally unrelated PV

            anyway , i did find a thread ...

            http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...threadid=94231

... that does speak of the MMbass and tranny PIs and then goes onto a discussion on LTPs and leo and his PI designs , reasons , intentions , favorite color , etc . very useful though .
there was a hammond transformer recommended : P-T124E , which is available from AES . ill keep looking around to see what else i can find , but it seems as though it would a suitable substitute .

once again , thanks for the time !

Last I looked, AES had two types to chose from, plus you could buy the winding only for one of them.
