  • Stereo receiver head

I have a stereo receiver head. like the kind they use for radio and cds and record players. mine says that it is 200W and the speaker output is from 8-16 ohms. so i plugged it into a cab that was 8 ohms and plugged my guitar into the in jack, and it was kind of quiet even when turned all the way up and it distorted.

is there a reason why these stereo receivers can't amplify guitar? i know its probably because its not made for it, but what specificly makes this so?

    thanks.

The inputs are designed to take line level signals - those are signals as astrong as hte ones from a tape deck or CD player. Your guitar dosn't tend to put out nearly that loud a signal.

i know its not ideal, but if i then plugged into a guitar amp with a line out and plugged that in the input, would it be strong enough?

        yes, that would work.

you may find that a home stereo amp isn't as heavy duty as a guitar amp and it'll fail if pushed.

An FX pedal - most any distortion, chorus, delay, phaser ... would do as well.
