  • Tube amp basics

I own a vintrage Ampeg Reverb Rocket and a blackface Fender Princeton. I decided I want to understand how tube amps work and to do some basic maintenance.

I bought Tom Mitchell's book. But what that book doesn't explain is why a particular circuit is made up of specific components - what a tube or a pot or a cap does in the circuit and why you want it to do that.

Is there a book for a beginner that goes beyond trouble shooting and explains what the components of each circuit do and what happens to the signal from the pup?

    Thanks.

You need to know some basic electronics theory. Try this link http://www.101science.com/Radio.htm

There are any number of basic electricity/electronics books out there too.

    Good luck,

    Howard

There’s also lots of good information here: http://www.pmillett.com/technical_books_online.htm
I’d suggest Norman Crowhurst’s literature like the basic audio course.

Over at DIY Audio there is a sticky for tubes for beginners, check it out. Warning, some of the posts are old and some URLs may have evaporated.

Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
