  • 6G3 preamp idea

I have been thinking of ways to make Hi/Lo gain inputs on a 6G3. I drew up this picture based on some ideas I found in other schematics.

    A few questions:

Will having a 100k and a 220k plate resistor from the same B+ wire cause any weirdness (like not enough power getting to one of the plates)?

Are the 100k and 220k resistors leading to the .022 coupling cap necessary (are these called mixing resistors)? Or can I lose them and go straight to the coupling cap?

    Am I missing something else?

Will this create a stock 6g3 channel and a higher gain one? That's my goal, but I am not working from much theoretical knowledge here. Just looking at other schematics to get some ideas. So if this is a dumb idea, you can tell me.

Well, you really should pair the 1.5K with the 100K and the 2.2?K with the 220K. The way you have it arranged with the mismatched mixing resistors there really won't be much of a gain difference. Try two 470K mixing resistors. Without mixing resistors you just have the plates connected together and there won't be much gain difference at all. The plate voltages will be low unless you change the cathode bias and you won't have a whole lot of headroom. But, go ahead and try it and it can be tweeked many ways.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
