That's one heck of a rheostat! But it probably doesn't present the OT with a resistance close to 4/8/16 ohm, does it?

It's something like 14.5 ohms which is close enough to 16 for me.

Do you have a picture of the PCB where you have the 2 jacks? How do you have this hooked up to the headphones?
