  • Bandaxall: cathode follwer or plate driven w/ gain recovery?

I have a Mac, so I can't use the Duncan software to figure this out:

Would there be less gain loss overall by using a cathode follower to drive a Bandaxall tonestack, or to drive it with the plate of the preceding stage and recovering gain with a gain stage after the stack?

I already know roughly how to shift the Bandaxall's values for a higher output impedence, but was just curious about gain - I've seen it both ways.

    Thanks.

cathode follower ; with gain recovery.

Master volume placement when using gain-recovery after tone stack

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't have enough gain stages for that. Today I tried the plate driven Baxandall (not "Bandaxall" like in my post title) with a gain recovery stage. I love the controls, but have way too much gain, even with the gain recovery stage's cathode unbypassed.

I feel as though I can manage that, but I do have another question about gain recovery:

Should the master volume go before or after the gain recovery stage? In other words - before the gain recovery and phase inverter, or between the gain recovery stage and PI. I'm trying to find examples...

      Thanks.

        MV after gain recovery.

I did just that after looking at an old a Laney schematic with a million gain stages. Had to raise the cathode resistor to 10k to get some headroom, but now everything's sounding great. Thanks.
