  • Rewiring V1, which schem...?

I have a Traynor Bassmate which is stock, and only uses half of V1. I want to basically fire the other side up, and alter the rest of the amp to guitar values.

What values would bring me into a semi-clean, bluesy preamp tone? I suppose maybe tweed deluxe values? The amp is a combo, driving a 15" speaker. It has 2 6v6, and 2 12ax7.

I was thinking some Marshall values, but maybe that would be too hot?

The standard 100k plate and 1k cathode would be a good first choice. If it's your 1st stage you could bypass the 1k with 25uf>330uf cap. Where you get your B+ is important to. You may want to add another filter cap and a ~10k resistor to de-couple the following stages and prevent oscillations.

IMO you won't have to fire up the other half of V1 to get a clean -warm bluesy tone, or a lot of drive. A 5E3 tweed deluxe only uses 1 pre-amp triode per channel to drive the tone stack and PI, and your amp only has 1 channel i think?
Not only that, a 5E3 uses a 12 AY7 for V1, the 12AY7 only has a potential voltage gain of 40, whereas your 12AX7 can give a voltage gain of 100.
So if you change your V1 values to deluxe specs (68k grid stoppers, 1.5k cathode, 100k plate, 25uf cathode bypass cap) you may have too much gain!

Without knowing the full schematic, it's hard to give any better advice, but I would change to the 5E3 values and see how you like it. LO input might give you the cleans, and HI might give you plenty of drive.

      Good luck!

I never thought of that! Each channel is only driving half the tube. You're right, I'm just going to change a few values and see where it takes me. I'm not going extreme anyway.

        Thanks guys!
