  • Question from a new member - Basic Theory

    Hey all!

I've been repairing basic problems for friends for a while now and am looking to branch out into basic amp design. Can you guys recommend any good resources for someone who prefers to learn hands-on or through instructor-led courses? I've found a copy Morgan Jones's Tube Amp Design and it's a LOT more in depth than I need right now.

I'm more interested in rule-of-thumb, tube-amp-specific knowledge rather than basic electronics. I've churned through a few textbooks and some of the MIT Open Courseware courses but they only briefly touch on amplifiers.

I understand the basic concepts behind how amps work and what makes them tick but, ultimately, I'd like to know things like how to properly mine pertinent data from a tube spec sheet and how to choose a power transformer based on how much voltage is required to run 4 x 6V6es and a couple of preamp tubes, etc.

Any help you all could shoot my way would be greatly appreciated.

    --SRT.

One of the local gurus, Merlin, recently published a book of his own which covers tube amp design. This thread covers it. I cannot recommend this book enough. Just reading the 1st chapter (which he published online for free) brought a clarity to my understanding of the basics of tube amplification.

I've got Merlin's book and I find it very useful

Kevin O'Connor also has a number of useful books. You can read some of his stuff on his web site, too:

        Here's the book catalog:
