  • primary impedance Gibsonette

    Hi all -

after lots of reading in this great forum I finally have a question.

I am recreating a Gibson GA8 (Gibsonette with the self splitting PP-power stage - not the dual SE) circuit and chasing for the corresponding OT.

Does anybody here have an idea when it comes to the primary impedance used in this circuit?

    Thanks and greetings!

Some of the SE 6V6 Gibsons were around 5.5K primary Z. As to the self split Gibsonnette...you'd probably have to find one & measure it to be sure.

I've built a similar, beefed up version & used BF Deluxe trannies (OT 6.6K) as I wanted to swap between 6V6 & 6L6...if you wanted to stick to 6V6 then either that, or a PP Princeton/Tweed Deluxe OT would "work".

Wattage doesn't increase dramatically over SE (I measured about >8W), but there is still a significant increase in volume & projection, low-ish gain for a guitar amp - especially if you add any kind of tone network, but a cool, mid sized, harp amp if fitted with a tone pot/hi cut cap.

Thank you for your information! It helps a step along.

Since I live in Germany I'd guess it'd be difficult if not impossible to find somebody here who could make a measurement.

So - if somebody owns this kind of amp and knows about the OT specs I'd be glad to get further information.

      Greetings

Rob @ Buffalo amps has recreated some old Gibsons, he'd be my first port of call...

...also, if no luck there, bear inmind that OTs are quick & easy to change, I wouldn't let not knowing the exact primary Z put you off/delay your build.

No need to worry - tinkering and finding out what I don't know is one half of the amp building fun. The path is the destination!

              Thank you again!

              I emailed Rob@Buffaloamps - what a great guy!
He immediately gave me the information I needed - everything between 8k and 10k is fine.
