  • Simple hybrid amp

I want a simple amp to build for a friend, it must be cheap, so i was thinking about something like this. In my head it should work, but i may have missed something, and it'd be better to point out my folly before i start to build.
It's basically JLH's class A output stage with a valve driver.
The preamp will be a standard single valve, volume/ tone number.

It may produce sound but not much of it. There is not enough current flowing in the 2N5551 to adequatly drive the 2N3055s and there is nothing to provide DC stability. There will be DC on the output. Kevin O'Connor presents a similar circuit in his book Tonnes of Tone but he uses a TIP29 driver transistor (T2) which is driven by a PNP 2N3906. The amp also uses a capacitor coupled output to the speaker and a 54V power supply to produce about 25 watts.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
REMEMBER: Everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school !
