Isn't one of the main advantages of torroidal transformers supposed to be that they are very efficient and can therefor be made lighter? In my quest to build as light as possible gigging amp I looked into using a torroidal PT. I found a source torroids that would work with tube amps http://plitron.com/ but was dissapointed to see the one I needed was pretty much the same weight as the equivalent Hammond. Is there anyone out there who uses torroids? I'm curious to know what your experiences with them have been. This is really just out of curiosity now as I have already bought a hammond.

BTW here's a link to a thread that turns into a discussion of toroids: http://music-electronics-forum.com/showthread.php?t=469

I've often read that a torriod can supply the power of a conventional transformer that weighs about twice a much. However, I have found that there are no off the shelf units available. So...I think the theory is correct but you would need to buy a custom optimized design torroid to make it happen.
