I stayed away from commercial units, partly because of the price, but also, I wanted to build some things prior to building my own tube amp (and hopefully learn a thing or two). I just finished assembling this. I've heard others say that it makes a dramatic difference. In my case, I didn't notice a "dramatic" difference. I was expecting it to greatly reduce 60 cycle hum, mostly when using single coil pickups. Perhaps the power to my home is fairly clean, compared to some others? I had to test by unplugging and plugging in again. An A/B box might be more helpful in comparing. I did run an electric drill on the same circuit, while powering my guitar amp from it, and no noise came through the audio. That's a plus.
I used a jigsaw with a metal blade to make two holes, and installed a standard double 120v outlet. The holes are kind of rough. I didn't think it would look "pro" to put a wall outlet cover plate on it. There must be a better way! In retrospect, I wish I had used a single 20A outlet, which is round (so I could use a step drill), and changing the plug on my power strip to match it.
Thanks for all your input!
