    Has anybody here tried this? While I LOVE the tone of my DRRI, my experimental nature is interested in this. Let me reiterate that I love my DRRI w/ NOS Sylvania 6v6/12ax7s. As a matter of fact, I played it out the other night for the first time with my Fralin Blues Specials loaded tele, left it at 6 and it was pure tele twangin', blues rockin' heaven. Could not have been happier.

    I'm not interested in hearing what WOULD happen with this change. I know to expect about 35W, bias adjustment, impedence mismatch, more headroom and fatter sound. I'm interested to know what your experiences are with this mod, and what exactly to did to make it work safely.

    "to make it work safely"... If the power transformer can't handle the extra heater current for the 6L6's you may burn it out.
    You might need to add a separate 6.3V transformer to run the heaters.

      I used to play with a guy that had a DR with 6L6s. I never really thought it sounded as good as ones with 6V6s.

        Stick your 6L6GC's in the amp and bias them colder than you would normally in an amp made for 6L6GC's, and run it for awhile and see how hot the power transformer gets and if the filament voltage sags. If not you're good to go. Not all DR's can handle it. A friend runs 6L6GC's in a '64 and it sounds great. He also disconnected the feedback and tremelo. Another guy tried it in his blackface DR and it couldn't hack it and the PT got too hot. Another guy I know tried it but biased the 6L6GC's for 70% of the max dissipation and he was blowing fuses and overheating the power transformer because it couldn't deal with the higher current draw. Try it and see...

          Some Fender PT's can handle it, some can't. I also know a guy that ran his without any trouble, but he also pulled the rectifier tube and ran with diode rectifiers. Remember, a transformer is rated for X watts power. While the heater winding can take the extra current, the total power the transformer can provide may be redistributed by eliminating the load of the tube rectifier's heater winding. While it is a different winding, there is more power dissipation available for the heat generated by the extra load on the 6.3V winding. The SS regulator also provides a higher B+, which 6L6's like anyway. With the extra B+ load, I wonder if the B+ current could ever keep up a 'normally' biased 6L6 output....

          That was my friend and his amp. Personally, I did the same thing with a Princeton, but bolted in a bigger Hammmond PT and OT. 'Mesa Princeton'.

            Game of inches...

            If you pull the pre-amp tube from the normal channel, you will free up a little more heater current. It may not be enough to get you anywhere, but if you are close it may help.
