  • preamp toroid power transformers source

I just ordered three from this US source and they're exactly what I've been looking for. I'll report how they worked later on.

240V 50VA Toroid Tube Pre Amp Power Transformer DIY Amp on eBay.ca (item 250597318094 end time 22-Mar-10 00:01:50 EDT)

the 100VA versions on their WEB site cost only a few bucks more, but they don't list those 50VA units and they're small enough to fit in a 1U rack!

Antek is the value in PTs; you can buy twice the current for less money than a hammond. They are "non traditional" looking but you can use one of their cans if you want pretty.

antek is great, cheap in price but hefty and well constructed. Used one in a gain clone...

those Anteks are SO cheap, a little better price than these other 1u ones:

I got one at my local surplus for <$10 but they are usually >$100(!)

Thanks for posting this. I am using one of the 400VA PTs for an amp I am building, and was kinda miffed when I saw they didn't have anything small enough for a preamp. I kinda wish these were smaller, like 25VA maybe, but they're so inexpensive/easy it's barely worth mentioning.

I've used these units from Allied (made by Hammond):
            Allied - 6K1VF - Transformers - Power Products - Allied Electronics
            Cheap, work great.

Well all three arrived well packed and rather quickly. No Can/US custom fees/dutys either. They're a bit tall for 1U due to the wires that angle up but they are beefy. I think you might be able to run a champ or 18 Watter of these badboys.
My preamp has 4 12ax7/12au7 and one octal for a 6V6, or maybe an el34 (for the output saturation thing). How much room to spare is there from the 50VA PT?

              "240Vac with 220Vac tap at 125mA,
Second and third outputs are 6.3Vac at 2A each"

              My math:
              Heaters: 300mA x5= 1.5 A +1.63 A = 3.13A
So both heater windings must be used.

              Plates: ? ?
