Anyone ever tried these (the 50W Marshall JMP/JCM800 tranny)? If so, how did it sound/perform?

I love mine, it's clear yet not shrill.

But granted, I haven't built a similar amp with another transformer so I've got no comparison basis except modern Marshalls and it blows them out of the water.

They're good, but i have come to try and prefer a magnetic components 50w marshall OT. It's actually cheaper, and after a lot of use in a marshall style build with a somewhat high gain preamp of both those and a heyboer, i choose the magnetic components even tho it's the cheapest one. The hammond has a thicker tone than the other 2, but it sounds flat compared to them. Thats the best way i can describe it. The other 2 have a more harmonically complex tone and the heyboer was thinner than the mag comp but no better sounding in any way, so the mag comp won out. I hate to say it because i was happy with the hammond before i tried the others, but now i'd have to put it in the # 3 position in back of the heyboer and the mag comp as the winner.

There is not an obvious huge difference between any of them immediately, but after trying all several times, often quickly by tacking them in to get a fast A/B, it eventually became more apparent just what each sounded like and which i felt was best. My pick is of course subjective so whether it applies to you is another thing. But i CAN say that i do have one thing going for my opinion, and thats having used 3 different OT's in the same amp and having swapped them around many times and used each at some point for an extended period. So whether or not my tastes would parallel yours, you can at least count on me having truly heard the differences to a degree most haven't....same amp, many tries, etc. I'm sticking with the mag comp because it not only sounds best to me but is the cheapest. Can't beat that.
