  • Suggest me a "cleaner" build...

I've built a tweed champ and significantly re-built a 5E3 tweed deluxe. I enjoyed building both and learned a lot on the last one. I want to build another amp that will have more cleans that the tweeds. A second channel for higher gain sounds would be nice but not a must. 15-20 watts is plenty. I would need at least some pretty good layouts and a schematic. I have a homebuilt with 2 6v6's, 3 12ax7's, 5Y3, and transformers to work from, although I wouldn't mind switching to EL84's if needed. I would plan to replace the chassis-I like a little bigger chassis to work in.
Any ideas what I might build and where I might find reference material?

If you like to stick to the fender schematics... try a black faced amplifier. There's a popular circuit called AB763 that Fender used widely during this area. This particular circuit has more gain stages in one of the two channels. Resulting in slightly more (over)drive in it. Over all the sound of the circuit is consider clean.

      I should have mentioned...

I already have a Bassman and a Pro Reverb, both mid-60's, both have had a few circuit changes done to get them closer to Blackface specs. I'm looking for something smaller and lighter in the 20 watt range.

Try a 5G9 - 12-18W - the combination of LTP inverter and fixed bias means its quite a bit cleaner and more bitey than a 5E3, and with bias-vary trem (using a CF stage after the LFO to make it quiet) - the trem is hypno-tastic. Make sure you use a PT rated a 300-0-300 (around 120mA or more) and with 3A min heater and 3A min 5V winding and or course a bias supply (50V is stock). I built mine with 5k Pr Z on the OT and it sounds loverly, but anything up to 8k is right - with higher load resistance yielding more power.
