  • The MOSFET Follies are rediscovered 8-)

Just stumbled onto the Power Drive

It appears the inventor either discovered the MOSFET Follies from 2000 at Geofex or reinvented it about three years ago.

Seems it works for high end tube hifi, too.
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

I probably read that article a hundred times! You really should expand it if you can find the time, it's very interesting!

    Kind regards, Jake

I wouldn't mess with the Tubelab guy, he looks crazy.

(That thing on the bench is a 200W SE amp using an 833 tube.)
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"

It seems that he does all of his photography this way:

Yikes! It's like the Incredible Hulk fell in a vat of bleach.

He's done some pretty inventive stuff, though. Same guy who made the "Minitron" tube/Class-D thing, and he's also done a David Berning-style switchmode output transformer. I wonder if he knew about the Berning patent, or reinvented it. I think I actually like his version better than Berning's.

I also wonder if he knows that his PowerDrive needs a zener between gate and source for reliability. He mentioned that gassy tubes would blow the MOSFET's gate, and the zener would stop that.

He does look a bit nutty, but at least he knows he's not immortal. Notice the plexi shield in front of the transmitter tube amp. Of course that won't stop any soft X -rays.....

Many mosfets nowadays have built-in zeners: I use a lot the STP 9NK50ZFP, which is cool because of the insulated case (no need of mica and washer!).
