  • EL-84 pinout question

I mixed up Grid #1 and Grid #2 - but the good people of Ampage/MEF have elucidated me. Thanks!

The control grid is pin 2 and the screen grid is pin 9 in an EL84 (as wired in your amp).

The only issue I've had with EL84s is that some older EL84s (eg Mullards) have pin 1&2 internally connected, so that you can connect the coupling caps to either pin 1 or 2.

If you use an modern EL84 in an amp with the control grid connected to pin 1 then you effectively have no bias voltage and the amp will over heat.

If seem several WEMs with the control wired to pin 1.

Equalling using a NOS Mullard in some amps where pin 1 is used as a connection for something else can cause problems).

The schematic diagram view for all tubes is from the bottom.
So if you happen to try to get a reading from the top view, you must invert every pin.

Sorry, I got confused, mixing up Grid #1 and Grid #2. Reviewing the data, everything stated here is correct. Thanks.
